clothing details

In the writing forum, we were discussing clothes and how we write them.

I like to sew, so I have an idea how clothing is made and it’s fun for me to create it, but I try not to get too technical. I go with smock, robe, breeches, pantaloons. That kind of thing. I try to avoid the ones someone would have to look up (gambeson, farthingale, cote-hardie).

I use clothes in my books more to show something else going on: how vain a character is, how rich, whether they’re trying to impress someone, whether they’re trying to fit in with a group. For example, I have a character who wears strongly contrasting clothing designed by his wife, who is visually impaired, so she can see him better. I have another one who really likes to look sharp, probably because of self-esteemFRED issues. Sorry, I have a little cough.
